Marrakech is a city in western Morocco. It is the fourth largest city in the country, after Casablanca, Fez and Tangier. The city is known for its large number of mosques and madrasas, as well as its medieval walled Old City. The city was founded in 1062 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar, chieftain and cousin of Almoravid ruler Yusuf ibn Tashfin. The city served as an important caravan stop for traders travelling between Fes and Senegal. In the 12th century, Marrakech became the capital of the Kingdom of the Almohads.

The red walls of the city’s medina (old quarter) and the numerous kasbahs (fortified villages) give Marrakech its nickname of the “Red City” or “Ochre City”. Marrakech is a popular tourist destination and has been ranked by CNN as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. In 2018, Lonely Planet listed Marrakech as the number 1 travel destination in the world.

Some of the places that tourists commonly visit while in Marrakech are the Jemaa el-Fnaa, a square and marketplace in the medina; the Koutoubia Mosque with its 212-foot (65-meter) minaret; and the Saadian Tombs, a 16th-century burial ground for members of the ruling Saadian dynasty. Other popular attractions include Majorelle Garden, a botanical garden created by French artist Jacques Majorelle; the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century palace used by the sultan of Morocco; and the Dar Si Said Museum, housed in a former palace.

Marrakech has a hot semi-arid climate. The city experiences warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
